Short answer
Which technical foundations should companies check for Google AI search and ChatGPT Search?
Google states that AI Overviews and AI Mode have no additional technical requirements beyond the normal requirements for indexable Search results. For ChatGPT Search, OpenAI recommends not blocking OAI-SearchBot. Technical GEO therefore starts with access, complete content and reliable delivery. Faster bot delivery can be a useful test hypothesis for JavaScript-heavy sites, but it is not a universally proven ranking or citation factor. [91][94][92]

Evaluation criteria
4 criteria to evaluate separately
Optimization and recommendations
Treat measures as documented provider recommendations and evaluate technical, structural, editorial and external source work separately.
Implementation
Evaluate whether findings are only reported or translated into technical, structural and editorial changes and then remeasured.
Service scope
Clarify the actual scope: research, prompt sets, source analysis, technical review, content and implementation are different work blocks.
Citation tracking
Measure mentions, recommendations and visible source citations separately and document the cited domain or URL as its own measurement object.

What technical foundation do Google AI Overviews, AI Mode and ChatGPT Search require?
Google does not require special technical treatment for AI Overviews or AI Mode: a page must be indexable and eligible to appear in Google Search with a snippet. OpenAI primarily points publishers to access for OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT Search. This is not a universal crawler standard, but it gives a clear starting rule: important content should be publicly accessible, crawlable and available as complete web content. [91][94]
- Check robots.txt and CDN or firewall rules for relevant crawlers.
- Verify HTTP status and canonical URLs for target pages.
- Keep important content directly available in textual form.
- Serve crawlable internal links to strategic pages.

Which crawler and protection layers should be checked before any technical GEO change?
An allowing robots.txt rule is not enough if the CDN, bot protection or firewall blocks the request later. Google explicitly names crawling and hosting infrastructure as prerequisites for its AI features, while OpenAI points to OAI-SearchBot. A technical audit should therefore go beyond configuration files and use server or CDN logs to verify which bots actually reach key pages and which status codes they receive. [91][94]

When does JavaScript become a technical risk for AI search and crawlers?
Google can render JavaScript, but still describes server-side or pre-rendered HTML as a good approach because it is faster for users and crawlers and not all bots can run JavaScript. If core content appears only after client-side JavaScript, teams should check what each relevant bot receives in the initial HTML and after any rendering step. For new architectures, server-side or static rendering is more robust than relying on dynamic rendering as a permanent workaround. [92][93]

Should a website serve bots a faster pre-rendered version of its pages?
It can be a useful test hypothesis when a site is JavaScript-heavy or logs show slow bot responses. Google describes server-side or pre-rendered HTML as useful for speed and crawlers. Botify documents SpeedWorkers as a product that serves pre-rendered cached pages to bots in a few hundred milliseconds. This does not establish a universal effect on citations or rankings. The impact should be tested with comparable control and variant pages. [92][93][95]
A clean test changes only bot delivery for the variant group. Crawl frequency, response time, indexing, citations and referral traffic should be observed separately. An improvement after rollout is initially an observed change, not proof of causation. [95]
- Split comparable URLs into control and variant groups.
- Capture a baseline for bot response time and crawl frequency.
- Change only bot delivery for the variant group.
- Evaluate crawls, citations and referral traffic as separate outcomes.

Does a website need llms.txt or special AI files for Google AI search?
For Google Search, the current answer is no. Google explicitly states that llms.txt and other special AI text files are not required for Google Search, including its generative features, and that Google Search ignores them. Such files can still be maintained for other systems if there is a concrete use case. Their impact should then be measured separately rather than assumed to be a general GEO factor. [90][91]

Which technical GEO measures do the agencies in the current scope document?
The four agencies in the current GEO scope document technical and content measures at different levels of detail, including page structure, structured data, technical SEO audits, entity connections and implementation work. These statements describe each provider's public service scope. They do not prove that any single measure independently causes a ranking, mention or citation effect. [54][53][55][58][81][56][84][57]
The full setup is described with a prioritized roadmap. In the implementation stage, page structure, content, entity and source signals are intended to be prioritized continuously from the measurement data. [54]
Interpretation and limitation: The source describes the intended workflow. It does not prove that every measure produces the same effect in every market.
Source checked: · Not hands-on tested
For implementation, onlinewachsen.de names page structure, content, entity and source signals plus technical measures prioritized from measurement data. The agency also offers web design and development. [53][54][55]
Interpretation and limitation: The measures included depend on the agreed project scope. The public description does not prove a guaranteed effect.

Engine Native names Schema.org markup, page structure, llms.txt, answer-oriented content and entity linking as elements of GEO implementation and describes technical and content implementation as part of its service model. [58]
Interpretation and limitation: The source documents the offered optimization scope, not a guaranteed visibility or citation effect from these measures.
Source checked: · Not hands-on tested
The site describes technical and editorial GEO implementation alongside SEO, structured data and semantic content strategy. [58]
Interpretation and limitation: Whether additional development or digital PR is included must be checked for the specific engagement.

getSichtbar's BELEG method describes building missing evidence after measurement and gap classification through service and product pages, sourced articles, comparisons, product data, structured data, press contributions and relevant source placements. It also names content and entity audits, information architecture, on-page and entity optimization, and technical implementation. [81]
Interpretation and limitation: The source documents the vendor's own process. It does not prove that every listed measure produces the same AI-visibility or citation effect in every market.
Source checked: · Not hands-on tested
The agency describes a model that combines analysis, SEO, content, authority, technical work and conversion implementation. [56]
Interpretation and limitation: Companies should verify which parts are delivered internally, by partners or directly by the agency team.
Source checked: · Not hands-on tested
For citation-ready content, Sichtlabs describes direct question-and-answer structures, self-contained answers, consistent terminology, source references, tables and lists, Schema.org markup, internal links and visible update dates. [84]
Interpretation and limitation: The source documents the vendor's recommendations. Individual format prescriptions are not adopted as universal effect guarantees or independently confirmed ranking factors.
Source checked: · Not hands-on tested
Sichtlabs describes integrated work across technical GEO optimization, content, external sources and authority signals. [57]
Interpretation and limitation: The measures actually included depend on the project scope.

How should a technical GEO test be designed so the result remains interpretable?
Technical changes should be tested as controlled interventions where possible. Comparable URL groups, a documented baseline and one clearly bounded change reduce the risk of confusing simultaneous content or demand changes with the technical effect. Server or CDN logs belong in bot-performance measurement; citations and referral traffic are additional separate outcomes and should not be assumed to move proportionally. [90][95]
- Define the hypothesis and primary metric before rollout.
- Keep control and variant pages comparable by template and baseline.
- Avoid simultaneous content changes in the variant group.
- Document the measurement window, bot types and failures.
- Report crawl, citation and traffic changes separately.
