Short answer
Why should mentions, recommendations and citations be measured separately?
toolindex uses three separate working definitions. A mention occurs when a brand is named in the answer. A recommendation occurs when the brand is proposed as a suitable option in an open decision question. A citation occurs when a specific external page or domain is visibly shown as a source or evidence. These events can occur together but do not have to. Several GEO providers also explicitly separate mention and citation metrics. [54][58][56][57][80][82][84]
Facts from vendor documentation. Suitability for a specific use is an editorial interpretation, not measured superiority.

Require transparent documentation of prompt sets, systems, repetitions, competitors, mention and citation logic, and measurement dates.
Citation tracking
Measure mentions, recommendations and visible source citations separately and document the cited domain or URL as its own measurement object.
Target audience
Evaluate whether audience, decision stage, market and question type fit the provider's documented use context.
Optimization and recommendations
Treat measures as documented provider recommendations and evaluate technical, structural, editorial and external source work separately.

How does toolindex operationally define mention, recommendation and citation?
For toolindex, a mention is first of all a visible brand name in the answer. A recommendation additionally requires a decision context in which the brand is proposed as a suitable option. A citation is a visible source reference to a concrete page or domain. These are measurement rules for reproducible analysis, not claims about how every AI system internally processes information. [54][80][82]
The service page distinguishes mentions, recommendations and citations, separates branded questions from open recommendation, comparison and decision questions without a preselected company name, reviews competitors and factual brand descriptions, and describes repeated measurement across multiple AI systems and prompts plus ongoing monitoring over time. [54]
Interpretation and limitation: The public page documents the provider methodology, not an independent benchmark of measurement accuracy or outcome quality.

onlinewachsen.de separates brand mentions, recommendations and citations on its GEO service page. The agency describes citation and source analysis plus external evidence from trade media, directories, reviews and partner pages as part of evaluating and optimizing AI visibility. [80]
Interpretation and limitation: The source documents the vendor's methodology and service model. It does not prove that a specific external mention causally produces an AI recommendation or citation.

getSichtbar distinguishes backlinks, brand mentions and AI citations as separate signals. It defines an AI citation as visible use of a specific external page as a source or evidence, reports Mention Rate and Citation Rate separately, and evaluates sources across presence, link, indexing, AI usage and business impact. [82]
Interpretation and limitation: The model and monitoring data are published by the vendor itself. The source is not independent validation of measurement accuracy or of a causal effect from source work.

- Count a mention only when the brand is visibly named.
- Count a recommendation only in defined decision questions.
- Store a citation with its concrete domain or URL.
- Track position in multi-provider answers separately.
- Mark ambiguous cases as unclear instead of forcing a label.

Why is a brand mention not yet a recommendation?
A brand can appear as an example, comparison object, source or side note without the system recommending it for the concrete need. onlinewachsen.de separates brand knowledge from recommendation in its methodology. A recommendation metric should therefore define in advance which language or structural role counts as a recommendation and which appearances remain mentions only. [54][80]

Why is a citation not automatically a recommendation?
A cited page can support one factual point even when the associated brand is not recommended. Conversely, a brand can be mentioned or recommended without a visible source appearing for that statement. getSichtbar therefore describes Citation Rate and Brand Mention Rate as separate metrics. toolindex treats the visible source as its own measurement object rather than as a proxy for recommendation. [82][58]
Engine Native describes ongoing GEO monitoring across prompt sets, Mention Rate and Citation Rate, and also names Share of Answer, source quality and competitor comparison. The website further describes building citable web sources as part of GEO implementation. [58]
Interpretation and limitation: The public vendor description names the metrics and measures but does not publish a complete independent validation of the measurement method or the effect of individual actions.

How should source and citation analysis be structured?
A source analysis should at minimum record the cited domain and concrete URL, the question for which the citation appeared, whether the measured brand is present on that page and which competitors the same source supports. onlinewachsen.de, Engine Native and getSichtbar document source or citation analysis as part of GEO work. That does not establish a general effect guarantee for any individual backlink or mention. [80][58][82]

Sichtlabs describes citation-ready content as content with precise, supportable statements, source references and a structure from which individual answers can be extracted independently. The page connects source work with consistent entity presentation and external evidence. [84]
Interpretation and limitation: The recommendations come from the vendor itself. Statements about preferred citation by AI systems are documented here as the vendor's methodology, not as independently confirmed ranking or citation factors.

How should mentions, recommendations and citations be reported together?
The three measurement objects should be reported side by side so it remains visible whether a brand is merely known, actually enters a shortlist, or is used as a source. The question, engine, time, competitors and cited URL also belong in the dataset. An aggregate score can be useful for an internal overview, but it should not replace the underlying metrics.
- Report Mention Rate separately.
- Report Recommendation Rate separately.
- Report Citation Rate separately.
- Maintain a separate table of cited domains and URLs.
- Publish definitions and exception rules in the report.
